Situational Awareness is one f the most critical functions of staying safe. Being aware of your surroundings is one of the most critical components of self-defense. Being aware means keeping an eye on the environment around you and noticing any potential threats. This means paying attention to your surroundings and the people within them to avoid any potential harm. It also means not burying your head in a smartphone or device so that you are unaware of happenings around you.

You can keep yourself aware of your surroundings and any potential threats in numerous ways.

First and foremost, Keep Your Head Up – It is essential to walk with your head up, so you have a better view of your surroundings. Be alert and use your eyes and ears to detect anything that seems suspicious. Second, you’ve heard the term “attitude is everything”. In terms of self-defense that can translate to Walk with Confidence – Walk with your shoulders back, head high, and a confident stride. It gives the impression that you are not a vulnerable target. Third, Always Stay Alert– Be mindful of people who seem out of place, are staring, or seem to be giving off negative energy. This will help you identify potential threats and stay out of harm’s way.

Our bodies and minds have a sixth sense (or Spidey Sense) that tends to buzz when something just doesn’t seem right. Another key to self-defense is to Trust Your Instincts – If something seems off, or you feel like danger is approaching, trust your instincts and move to a safer spot. Finally, it goes without saying to Try to Avoid Dangerous Areas – If possible, avoid high-crime areas or areas that are not well-lit.

Self-awareness is essential in preventing attacks from happening. If an incident does occur, your ability to remember significant details about the attacker and situation can be instrumental in bringing the offender to justice. Remember that prevention is always the first and best line of defense.
